ADVENT: PREPARING FOR CHRISTMAS

It's Advent, which means it's time to get the words out of storage.

Hope. Peace. Joy. Love.

These words weave their way through the season of Advent, inviting us to prepare for the birth of Jesus, the Word made flesh. And like so many of the things we unbox this time of year, these words have a real sense of familiarity, don’t they? Like favorite ornaments we hang on the Christmas tree, or handmade decorations passed down from previous generations, or even the special traditions we save for this holiday season.

This year, as we watch and wait for Christmas, our worship will center around these words. Where do we find hope? How do we work for peace? With whom can we share joy? What does love look like for us, here and now? And together we will remember that hope, peace, joy, and love are more than just words we say: they are promises we hold, gifts we receive, and truths we live.

Advent is about getting ready for Christmas, anticipating hte new life that is surely on the way. Together, let’s dust off the hope, peace, joy, and love of this season. Let’s light candles to shine a little light, even in the darkness. Let’s draw closer to the God who is even now drawing closer to us.
